It is famous for its laid-back surfer culture, beautiful beaches, world-class zoo, Navy base and thriving gayborhood, Hillcrest. Many top elected officials, including state senators and city council members, have come from the LGBT community. Its mid-July Pride Festival includes one of the largest parades in the country and a two-day music festival.
I was born and raised in San Diego. The majority of the city is gay friendly, but like any city, the best part is the gayborhood. Hillcrest is home to some of the best restaurants, bars and thrift stores in the city.

While San Diego may sometimes be overlooked by its larger Californian relatives of Los Angeles and San Francisco, this sunny city to the south of the state offers plenty of vibrancy, culture, and LGBTQ life for the perfect gaycation. The majority of gay life can be found in Hillcrest, a quaint northern district which offers a very open attitude along with many pedestrianized streets, gay bars, and restaurants. Hillcrest is an older neighborhood which has gone through gentrification. Many streets are lined with trees. There are Craftsman homes and Mid-Century modern condominium buildings.
